Foreign Affairs Minister Stavros Dimas represented Greece at an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting yesterday in Brussels. The Council discussed Afghanistan, in preparation for the NATO summit in Chicago on May 20-21, as well as developments in the Middle East peace process and recent events in Syria and Libya. In addition, the Council debated relations with Russia and Ukraine, examining the next steps concerning the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement
Addressing the Council, Dimas stressed, in relation to Afghanistan, that tackling illegal migration coming from that country should be among the EU’s top priorities, both by implementing measures to limit migration flows and repatriate illegal immigrants. On Libya, Dimas, after reiterating Greece’s support to the difficult process of the country’s democratization, drew the Council’s attention to the recent increase in migration flows. He further noted that Greece as a country at the external borders of Europe is already receiving the greatest pressure, among Member States, with thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter the country in order to go to central Europe via Turkey, which hasn’t taken effective measures to tackle the phenomenon.
