His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomiew was presented with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom of Worship Award, during a ceremony held in the Netherlands, on May 12, attended by Queen of the Netherlands Beatrix and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Along with the Patriarch, the Al Jazeera news network received the Freedom of Speech and Expression Award, former Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva the International Four Freedoms Award, Ela Ramesh Bhatt the Freedom from Want Award, and Hussain al-Shahristani the Freedom from Fear Award.

The Patriarch was honoured for his efforts to promote religious freedom and human rights, his initiatives to advance religious tolerance among the world’s religions, together with his work toward international peace and environmental protection.
