The worldwide community of museums will celebrate International Museum Day around May 18, with events based on the theme Museums in a Changing World. New challenges, New inspirations.

In Athens, the Network of Museums and Cultural institutions of the Athens Historic Centre invites all to meet and get (re)acquainted with its 17 member institutions, through an initiative titled Athens: Neighbourhoods & Museums, which started on May 11 and will run through May 27. The starting point of the action is the B & M Theocharakis Foundation of the Fine Arts and Music, culminating at the Exile Museum, in Thisseio district.

On May 18, several museums and archaeological sites will offer access to their premises and special exhibitions free of charge. The Acropolis Museum celebrates International Museum Day with free entry and music events on its second floor balcony. On May 19, to celebrate European Night of Museums, it will stay open from 8:00 a.m. till midnight, while in the evening at the Museum’s courtyard, the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart and Haydn.

On the occasion, the Hellenic National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen to honour this year the Goulandris Natural History Museum-Gaia Centre, in Kifissia district.
